Meet The 2022 Winners: The Detroit Pitch Competition

Updated: Nov 9, 2022

Shelia M. Curtis - 1st Place Winner

Shelia is the founder of SHE, a Safe Have of Empowerment for girls. Founded in Detroit, SHE’s primary goal is to support each subsequent generation of “Motor City” teens to enter adulthood with more self-love, self-awareness, self-confidence, and self-determination than their predecessors.

SHE is a safe haven where young women will receive the education, information, empowerment, and intellectual resources to support making wise choices on their beautiful journey.

Alicia McKay - 2nd Place Winner

Alicia is the founder of No Fear Café. It’s a co-learning center for edutainment that explores S.T.E.A.M. (sciences, technology, engineering, art, and math), building life skills, and social-emotional learning (SEL).

They provide an atmosphere that fosters a fun, engaging, positive, and safe environment where students build strong relationships with peers and adult staff. Their STEM-based programming can teach science and math while building confidence and introducing tech careers.

Deslyn Adams - 3rd Place Winner

Deslyn is the Founder of Koality Kontent. They believe everyone has a personal connection to nature and, thus, a responsibility to protect it! That’s why they’ve created a high-quality collection of puzzles that provides mental stimulation and environmental action.

With sustainable materials, eco-activist artists, and a percentage of the sales being donated to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), they hope to spread awareness of the threats facing nature today and inspire others to act for tomorrow. They believe anyone can change the world by connecting to their environment, one puzzle piece at a time.

Deslyn is an avid nature explorer with bonds inside the puzzle community. She saw an opportunity to connect with puzzle fanatics and educate them on their connection to nature and protecting it. Since then, she has prided herself on engaging with other puzzlers and takes a passionate stance on the positive effects of puzzling on both the brain and the environment.
